About
This is my website that I am using to catalogue my adventures in music and sound over the last 25 years.
RAFT is the solo name that I, Pat Noecker, perform under. I have been exploring composition through IOS apps and the potentiality of crowd-sourced collage since 2012. I perform with the cell phone, text messaging, loopers and electronics in order to create “audience-generated” sonic architecture. As an extension of these technologically inspired performances, I released an app in October of 2014 called TRANSMISSIONS to accompany my hour-long improvisatory ensemble piece also called TRANSMISSIONS. The TRANSMISSIONS app allows audience members to join this collaborative experiment through the speaker phone function. RAFT’s self-titled genre of Cellphonism stands to re contextualize the cell phone’s purpose as a communication device into one that can generate art and energy. As of November 2017 I began creating with my new group CASC, in which I continue cell phone creations, but now with an actual band. The Moog Filtatron, Animoog, Imashine and the standard voice notes, voice mails and other sonic matter are some of the compositional tools that I use. My band mates are Alex Phillipe Cohen and Lebron Helm of PKBO.
Cellphonism is a significant departure from the bands I've been in over the last 18 years with Liars, These Are Powers, n0 things and Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang, but the energy from each of these groups still carries over into my performances.
I am also continuing work on the bass guitar. In January of 2015 I began work on a 20 minute trio piece for bass called MUSIC, in which I re examined my relationship with music, sound, bass guitar and the trio formation. The isolation demanded by this process allowed me to address solo composition and my relationship with the trio form. MUSIC took one year to complete and in the process I devised an approach called Musical Realism, or music with no effects. I am currently performing the piece in 2018.
My bands have received critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, New York Magazine, Wire, Spin, and numerous other publications throughout the world. See the PRESS page.
MoMA, the Whitney, PS1, the Kennedy Center, the Getty Museum, London ICA, and the San Francisco Fillmore, among many other cultural and underground venues have all hosted my bands.
